Ilan Stavans

Mexican-American intellectual, essayist, and cultural commentator Ilan Stavans (author page at Amazon) is the author of The Hispanic Condition (1995), On Borrowed Words: A Memoir of Language (2001), Spanglish (2003), Dictionary Days (2005), and Gabriel García Márquez: The Early Years (2010). He edited The Poetry of Pablo Neruda (2003), the three-volume Isaac Bashevis Singer: Collected Stories (2004), and Becoming Americans: Four Centuries of Immigrant Writing (2009). He has been called “the czar of Latino culture in the United States” (The New York Times) and “Latin America’s live liest and boldest critic and most innovative cultural enthusiast” (The Washington Post). Stavans is the Lewis-Sebring Professor of Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College. He is translating Juan Rulfo’s El llano en llamas into English. (updated 4/2010)
